sorry if u guys cant see it clearly here is a typed versionLighted up my Spirits The neighbourhood transformed into two mystical multiverses emerge with each other, Diwali and Halloween. There was the brightness of enlightening diyas, vibrant patterns of rangolis and sparkling fairy lights across everywhere versus the gloomy darkness of intimidating figures of witches, vampires, and even zombies along with the chuckle of jack-o-lanterns. I was getting ready for trick or treating, as I was putting intricate makeup for a tenebrous witch. “Mum, don’t I look really terrifying for a wicked witch” I asked, as she almost got jump scared seeing me! “Yes of course you do, so about the candies we brought for trick or treating, are you going to give some to your friends” Mum asked, despite knowing the answer. “Of course I am going to have them all for myself, I really love candy!” I exclaimed, as she just rolled her eyes and continued making mouth watering carrot alwa. Jumping up and down, I quickly said bye to my parents and sprinted down the pathway seeing a mixture of costumes such as a zombie in a green chudidar and a princess in a rich Indian dress. What a creativity I thought as I was messaging my friends. “We are all meeting at the Willow tree right” I was confirming. “Ya of course…” replied my friend Shreya. This year, all the kids across the neighbourhood were going to bring all their candies near the ‘Willow tree’ as we call it, as most of our parents are busy bees for the major Diwali preparation, so I was very thrilled to get all the candies, it will be like a wonderland! But once I reached the haunted looking tree, it was barren with not a single person there! I waited for 30 minutes, staring into the deep roots of the wisdom tree, whispering that no one will ever come. My mind was juggling convoluting thoughts in my head, as I noticed a group of kids trading chocolates and candy with each other, not just any group … my group! My face turned red as a raging devil, as fierce sparks were shooting from my head. How dare they do trick or treating without me! “Hey why did you guys not do trick or treating without me, do you know how long I waited for” I unknowingly asked, as they were all shocked and caught red-handed. “Sorry, but every year we do halloween with you you never give us any of the candies and always take a handful from each house, making some of us not even getting candy from some of the houses” one of my friends confronted. “And sometimes you even steal our candies from us and even do cruel things like tripping us over just to get the candy. We just got sick of it so sorry” another kid said. I looked at Shreya, my closest friend of them all in the neighbourhood, looking down ashamed of herself and clueless to respond. In the middle of this war, I just froze still as a sculpture, it felt like all the fantasy witches, vampires and mummy’s were all laughing and humiliating me in this situation, as I was not able to bare it any more. Dozen tears of a broken heart were rolling down my red, embarrassed cheeks, and I transformed into a real witch! “You guys are the most wicked, wicked friends ever, and you guys must never ever have the slightest happiness for the halloween you guys celebrate every year this year forward. And if you guys even think about coming to my house at Diwali, something terrible will happen beyond your immature imaginations. You guys should have just told you are not interested with me since the start, but the part that mainly hurts is making me hurt for the joy of your cruel hearts” I screamed, as I sorrowfully ran back home, leaving everyone in defining silence. WORST HALLOWEEN EVER! Coming back home with an empty basket, I started to get ready for Diwali as I was putting on my traditional dress, and trying to put enough makeup to cover my tears, but it was never enough. Putting on my Indian lehanga, a tapestry of majestic, pink silk along with my shimmering bindi and tinkling bangles I looked ready for this. But deep in the inside, I was a lost soul, which will never find its way back to happiness. Guests started to come to my house, including my ex-friends who were very, very quiet when they came to my house. It may seem that I was querulous, as people were thinking me as the one who did the wrong when they are the ones that stranded be in an abandoned, that feeling is just ineffable! Too mad to play with my friends, I sat with my mum and her friends, as she looked back at me puzzled. “Aradhya, are you not going to play with your friends, they are continuously looking at you. Why don’t you go and talk to them?” My mum asked, and I gave her the one death scowl which probably chilled her bones! As I was with my mum, I noticed the little actions of kindness which illustrated a big meaning to me. She had a ladoo box from her favourite sweet store across the road. We are not allowed to buy sweets often, because my dad is a doctor and he will get fire crawling up on his bones whenever he sees us eating so many sweets, that’s why I usually hide them in my room for snacks. Despite of all these, my mum humbly shared all the ladoo’s, with everyone taking one making her left with none. I looked at her with wide eyes, astonished to see her normal without a single percent of disappointment inside her. Is my mum acting or is she really happy, I thought. Later, when we were doing Diwali crackers, everyone took a cracker and there were little kids taking it again and again, and when my mum was about to take one, another little kid took it. Despite my mum having no turns with the crackers. Observing my mother, my mind was confused wondering how she was taking everything so lightly? If I was my mum, I would be really miserable, like how I was now. Feeling sympathy for my mum, I gave her the fresh new crackers I had in my hands, as her eyes were filled with joy! “Thank you so much sweetheart!” she said as she enjoyed so much with the cracker that my heart brightened. My friends saw this and were surprised to see me just give a cracker for free. Although, their faces were planted with frowns, and I realised how my mum was so happy despite all of these. Diwali & Halloween were about community and generosity, sharing and caring to our community and keeping those around us happy immediately makes us happy. If we be selfish, we will never find the true happiness inside ourselves. Immediately, I took the halloween candy my parents brought and went towards my friends. “Look guys, I am really sorry about the incident which happened in the park, I may have been little but of a drama queen, but now I truly understand what you guys mean’t. I was selfish to get the candy all to myself, but please take these candies as a tribute to my apologies” I said, beaming my eyes towards them. My friends sprinted to their houses fast as a cheetah as they all came back with their halloween candies. “We are all so sorry for leaving you out in the middle of the park, but to make it up we will do a little trick or treating here” Shreya said, as I hugged all of them, giving them relief. Quickly, I whispered one of my friends to do me a favour by giving the cash to her dad and get a sweet box of ladoos specially parcelled for my mum. She gave it to me and I secretly hid it in the fridge without my mum knowing, picturing the wide smile in her face once she sees it. The negative monster spirits were cleansed by the atmosphere of halloween and Diwali, with good winning over evil. Finally, everyone lits a diya, as light spreads over darkness. ‘Lighted up myself, Lighted up my soul, Lighted up my spirits’ I learned, as this day will always be an unforgettable life lesson!
